Dear Friends,
We are ecstatic to announce that our Needle Art and Karats Fine Jewellery Breast Friends Fundraising Event haves raised over ten thousand dollars.
This money has been donated to support vital breast cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital. A huge thank you from Needle Art and Karats Fine Jewellery to everyone who attended or contributed to our Breast Friends event. Thank you as well to our suppliers, customers, and friends who donated their products, services, and time to help make the event a success. From the delicious food and the amazing auction and raffle prizes, to the help we had at the store that day, we couldn't have done it without you!
Needle Art has an ongoing fundraiser at the store. We would like to thank all of those who have donated when custom lettering and names have been painted on canvases.
Our third event is being planned for the Spring of 2010 and we will be supporting PYNK: A Breast Cancer Program for Young Women. The Odette Centre is home to PYNK, a highly specialized program focusing on the unique needs of young women with breast cancer. Women under 40 who experience breast cancer make up 5 per cent of all breast patients at the Odette Cancer Centre. These women have very different needs than older breast patients.
They may have young children and families to care for; be concerned with preserving their fertility; suffer more severe side effects of treatment, and suffer more acutely socially and psychologically from breast disease. These women also know that they are more likely to have a recurrence of their breast cancer and die of it than if they were diagnosed at an older age.
Even state of the art cancer treatment for early cancers is challenging for the body, disruptive to energy levels and hormones and damaging to fertility. Treatment takes a heavy toll on these patients, many of whom have others relying on them, from children and spouses to colleagues and aging parents. For these women, whose friends and peers are still generally healthy and active, the experience of diagnosis and treatment can feel particularly isolating and terrifying.
The PYNK program, the first of its kind in Canada, was created by Dr. Ellen Warner to support young women through their breast cancer journey.
Needle Art and Karats teams are proud to support the PYNK Program and will give you further information about this very important program in upcoming newsletters.
Thank you,
Your Breast Friends at
